Minneapolis-based Syncris is on a mission to improve the performance and reliability of microgrids—small electric grids that can operate with or without a larger network.
CEO Scott Tracy says the company does that through a unique type of power inverter developed by University of St. Thomas electrical engineering professor Greg Mowry and associate Zach Edmond. The main selling point of Syncris’ product, Tracy says, is that it can help customers withstand power outages on larger grids.
Formerly known as Renew Power Systems, Syncris largely operates in the B2B space, selling its wares to microgrid installers. “The end users of our technology right now are commercial or industrial customers,” Tracy says. For these customers, power supply disruptions are often costly. “You and I might notice it as the flickering of bulbs, but if you’re running a manufacturing operation with sensitive equipment, these fluctuations can be a real problem.”
The company’s inverters are built in Minnesota and sold around the country.
Syncris has so far been funded by friends and family, but Tracy says the company is seeking about $5 million in its first formal funding round. “We’re very proud of the fact,” he notes, “that we’ve gotten to our first commercial product just with friends-and-family investment and lots of sweat equity [from] our staff.”
